Gladys A. Lane Lane

Gladys A. Lane, age 94 of Iowa City and formerly of Avery and Albia died Friday morning, July 17, 2009, at the Iowa City Care and Rehabilitation Center of Iowa City. Gladys was born on July 4, 1915 in Monroe County, Iowa to John D. and Maude Shaul Mahin. She attended schools in Monroe County and Albia. She married Francis E. Lane on September 10, 1935. They lived in Milan, Illinois, Avery and Albia, Iowa. Gladys was a homemaker and stay at home mother until her youngest was in junior high school. At that time she turned her cooking talents into a job away from home at the Albia Sales Barn Caf�' and the Albia Coffee Shoppe. Gladys' many talents included being there for her family and other children by being a 4-H leader, a Girl Scout Leader, and always ready to help at her children's schools. Gladys moved to Iowa City, Iowa in 1982 to be near her daughter Linda and family. Each winter until the last few years of her life she would spend with her daughter Carol and her family in California. Gladys also loved to travel to see her sons and their families in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, California, and Iowa. Gladys' greatest joy in life was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was known as Gladys, Mom, Grandma, Grams, Great Mom, and also Jada by her younger brother Irvin. She is survived by two daughters, Carol Athey (Fred) of Atascadero, California, and Linda Hopkins (Nate) of Iowa City; one son, Richard Lane (Rosie) of Woodward; one daughter-in-law, Wilma Lane of Warminster, Pennsylvania. Gladys is also survived by five grandsons, Steve Athey, David Athey, Doug Lane, Robert Lane, and Terry Crim; two granddaughters, Debra Lane Seybold and Dory Lane Taylor; five great granddaughters; eight great grandsons; one great -great grandson; five sister-in-laws and many nieces and nephews. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, John and Maude; her husband Francis; her son, Ronald Lane; seven sisters, Verla McDonald, Fannie Colwell, Grace Kaldenberg, Mildred Reed, Frances Nixon and two in infancy; also five brothers, Jim, Roy, Bill, John, and Irvin Mahin. A memorial has been established to the Union Chapel Cemetery, American Heart Association and the American Lung Association.
