Charles "Chuck" William Derby

Our Dad hung up his tool belt on June 28, 2026 at 72 years old leaving behind a family forever shaped by his presence and love. Dad passed away just how he wanted; in the home he built, on the land he found joy in, and surrounded by his wife, kids, grandkids, his sister Connie and sister-in-law JeanAnn. Hallelijah. Born on July 7, 1953 to William & Ruth (Scott) Derby in Albia, IA and two sisters, Connie (Dicks) & Cindy (Fluegge). Dad graduated from Albia High School in 1971. He earned his pilots licence at 16 and never lost his love of flying. He was proud to have served in the Navy, carrying that pride throughout his life. A truly gifted master craftsman Dad spent his life creating with his talented hands and building a family with his heart. To Dad the greatest thing he ever built was the close, loving family he made hand in hand with our mother. He married his high school sweetheart Cynthia Starcevic on September 1, 1973, in Albia, and they were blessed to have celebrated 52 years together. They raised three children: Craig, Catherine, and Carolyn. The five of us formed a strong, unbreakable bond that held our family together no matter life’s adversities. Our family home—every board, every nail—was shaped by his calloused hands, holding his love for our Mother in every corner. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting—a passion he passed on to Craig. We will forever walk the timber and fields, feeling his presence all around us for that is where he and Mom were happiest and at peace. Beneath his rugged presence was a man with laughter, a soft heart, a generous spirit, and a quiet faith that only those closest to him truly knew. How blessed we were. Dad leaves behind his family, in whom his traits and characteristics run deep within each of us, including his grandchildren whom he absolutely adored and they him. Cynthia, Craig (Angela & Hunter), Catherine (Matthew Bishop, Ella, Izzy, Caroline & Vivianne), Carolyn (Aaron Rachubinski & Elizabeth) We will all carry forward his legacy and the comfort of knowing we were the center of his life. We love you Dad. "Grant him eternal rest from his labor, for his work on earth is done." Chuck’s wishes were honored by his family and a private celebration was held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Albia, IA.
