Sharon Ann Reed

Sharon Ann Reed, age 79, of Albia, IA, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Mahaska Health Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa, IA. Sharon was born on January 21, 1945, at home Northeast of Albia, daughter of Charles Rockefeller and Margueritte Mable (Gray) Maddison. She grew up attending school and graduated from the Albia High School with the Class of 1962. She was united in marriage to Ronald “Ron” James Reed on June 27, 1964, in Albia, and to this union, 2 children, Cynthia (Cindy) Ann and Bryan James, were born. Sharon and Ron were blessed with 50 years of marriage prior to his passing on August 12, 2014. While attending high school, Sharon volunteered at the Albia Hospital and worked at Dairy Queen. She then went to work at Hy-Vee before staying at home to raise her children. Sharon and Ron owned and operated Ronald J. Reed Trucking where she kept the books and worked alongside Ron. She later went back to work at the Hy-Vee bakery in Oskaloosa. She then worked as a media specialist for the AEA (Area Education Agency). Throughout the years, Sharon helped Ron on their farm where she enjoyed tending to the sheep, and later helped her son, Bryan on the farm. A woman of strong faith, Sharon was a member of Pleasant Corners Church before becoming a member at the First Christian Church in Albia. She was a long-time 4-H leader and was on the Monroe County 4-H Council. She was also active in the Eddyville Garden Club. Sharon enjoyed doing cross stitch and sewing. Sharon enjoyed spending time with her friends, doing things such as traveling, Sunday evening get togethers, and New Year’s Eve parties. Sharon’s grandchildren were her true joy in life and she enjoyed helping shuttle them around and attending their activities. Sharon is survived by her 2 children, Cindy (Mike) Shull and Bryan (Amber) Reed; 4 grandchildren, Colton Shull and Jayce, Brayden, and Ashlyn Reed; a brother, Dale (Janet) Maddison; in-laws, Terry (Carol) Reed and Randy (Penny) Reed; and a special niece who provided great care for her, Hettie Lahart. Sharon is also survived by several other nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends. Sharon is preceded in death by her husband, Ron Reed; parents, Charles and Margueritte Maddison; special aunts and uncles who helped raise her, Merwyn and Maxine Gray, Hugh and Louie Gray, John and Zelma Lahart, Tom and Lena Maddison, and other aunts and uncles; her parents-in-law, Tobe and Elsie Reed; and siblings-in-law, Bob (JoAnn) Reed, Ray (Pat) Reed, David Reed, and Nellie (Raymon) Osborn. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Sharon’s family present from 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. to greet family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the First Christian Church in Albia, with Pastor John Sowers officiating. Burial will follow services at Service Chapel Cemetery in Monroe County. A memorial has been established to the Mahaska Health Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa, or to the family to be determined at a later date.
