Libbie "Jo Ann" Ahn

Libbie “Jo Ann” Ahn, age 90, of Albia, IA, passed away on Friday, October 21, 2022, at the Monroe Care Center in Albia. Jo Ann was born at home in rural Monroe County on May 11, 1932, to Hugh Leonard and Louie Francis (Scott) Gray. She grew up attending school in Albia and graduated with the class of 1950. On June 16, 1950, she was united in marriage to Richard Ahn and to this union, two children, Richard James and Wiley Hugh were born. Jo Ann worked at Chamberlains in Albia, building windows and later at Trophy Glove in Albia. Jo Ann enjoyed being outdoors, flower gardening, and going on trail rides, especially the Cross Country Trail Ride in Eminence, MO. She was a member of the Monroe County Saddle Club. She loved her horse, Captain Rusty, and was very good with horses. Many felt that when Jo Ann was riding a horse, she and the horse became one. She especially enjoyed watching her son, Wiley Hugh, wrestle and compete in motorcycle races. She attended sporting events to watch her son, Rick, participate or coach. Jo Ann had a special relationship with her daughter-in-law, Nancy. She was a talented seamstress and made many quilts. Above all else, Jo Ann enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and living on the farm. Jo Ann is survived by her two children, Rick (Nancy Brant) Ahn and Wiley Hugh Ahn; a sister, Donna Kromray; Nancy’s children, Amanda (Jon) Coats, Matthew (Molly) Brant, Steven (Amy) Brant, Elizabeth (Andy) Smith, Deborah (Luke) Demarest, and Paige (Patrick) Burzlaff; and 21 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a special niece, Norene Johnston, and several other nieces, nephews, and cousins; her good friends, Wanda Thomas and Judy Peterson; and was extremely close to Maizie (Nolan) Wehr and their newborn son, Westin Joseph. Jo Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Ahn; her parents, Hugh and Louie Gray; a sister Barbara Shelquist; a special sister-in-law, Gertrude Ahn; and good friends, Carolyn Wilson, Ruth Keegel, and Carol Reed. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Jo Ann’s family present to greet family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 5, 2022, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastors Steven and Matthew Brant officiating. Burial will follow services at Service Chapel Cemetery in Monroe County. Memorials may be contributed to the family which will be donated to Hidden Acres Camp Horse Program.
