Lawrence Chester Walker

Lawrence Chester Walker, age 79, of Albia, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice. Lawrence was born November 9, 1944, at home in Avery, Iowa to Orville and Leona (Jones) Walker. He grew up attending grade school in Avery and graduated from Moravia High School in 1963. On April 3, 1966, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Tucker at the United Brethren Church in Albia and to this union their daughter Lindsay was born. Lawrence and Marilyn shared 57 years of marriage. Upon graduating from high school Lawrence started working for Sutherland Lumber Company. He then joined the International Dealership in Parts in Ottumwa until the store closed and he moved to Industrial Machines and then to Greiner Implement. He retired from Titan Machinery in Oskaloosa and worked part-time for Belzer Equipment, Inc. in Albia. Lawrence farmed on his family farm in Avery for 47 years. He was a member of the Southern Iowa Vintage Tractor Club and enjoyed riding his International 450 on tractor rides with club members and participating in parades and the Bob Reed Memorial Tractor Show. Lawrence particularly enjoyed taking his car to the dragstrip in Eddyville and later showing his restored 1967 Chevelle in car shows and working on restoring other cars. He was well known for his sense of humor, always sharing jokes and entertaining stories. He was a member of the Avery Church and served on the Board of Trustees. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his daughter, Lindsay (Chad) Allen; his granddaughter, Emily; sister-in-law, Marian Walker; brother-in-law, Dallas Tucker; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Leona Walker; brother, Roland Walker; twin sister, Lorraine Walker; his in-laws, Dallas and Vera Tucker; sister-in-law, Sharon Tucker; and nephew, Kyle Walker. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia with Lawrence’s family present throughout to greet family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 12, 2024, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastors Dennis and Teresa Miller officiating. A memorial has been established to the Avery Church.
