Kenneth Lee Harkins

Kenneth “Lee” Harkins, age 75, of Albia, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2020, under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice at Oakwood Specialty Care in Albia, IA. Lee was born on December 18, 1944, to Harvey Miles and Wilma Susie (Summers) Harkins at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, IA. Following school, he served his country in the United States Army. Lee married Elizabeth Ileen Baxter in 1992 in Albia. Lee and Elizabeth shared nearly 18 years of marriage prior to her passing on February 24, 2010. Lee was an over the road truck driver for many years. He was a very active member of the Nazarene Church. He enjoyed being outdoors and fishing. He also enjoyed cooking, canning vegetables, and collecting nuts to make cookies and snacks. Lee loved to visit with his family and friends. Lee is survived by 2 stepchildren, Sally Moffet of Des Moines, IA and Randy Moffet of Kansas City, MO; 6 grandchildren, Kellie (Justin) Enderson of Huxley, IA, Jeff (Kim) Turner of Weatherford, TX, Stephanie Moffet of Ottumwa, IA, Allison (Joel) Turner of Elk Horn, IA, Jennifer Meunier of Wisconsin, and Patrick (Amber) Turner of Leighton, IA; 9 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Lee is also survived by an uncle Ernie Harkins; an aunt Mary Bell; 5 nephews; 2 nieces; 5 cousins and 2 sisters-in-law, Sue (Gene) Harkins and MaryEtta (Harv Jr.) Harkins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; his parents, Harvey and Wilma Harkins; 2 stepdaughters, Ginger Moffet and Pam Turner; an aunt LaVonia, a grandson, Jason Huddleston; a great grandson, Neomyiah Fortner; 2 brothers; his paternal grandparents, and maternal grandparents; his parents-in-law, Clifford and Ruth Baxter; a sister-in-law, Karen Fleagle; and a niece, Martha. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Lee’s family present from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. to greet family and friends. According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2020, at the Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene in Moravia, IA, with Pastor Terry Chapman officiating. Burial will follow services in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, IA. A memorial has been established to the Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene in Moravia, Iowa.
