Jackie "Jack" Ellis Rhodes

Jackie “Jack” Ellis Rhodes, age 71, of Albia, IA, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at his home, under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice. Jack was born on June 19, 1952, in at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ottumwa, IA, to Charles and Elma (Robinson) Rhodes. Jack grew up in Hiteman where he was baptized and attended the Baptist Church. He graduated from the Albia High School with the class of 1972. On June 8, 2002, Jack was united in marriage to Rosealee Selby at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia. Jack worked in bridge construction his entire career, starting in Des Moines for Cramer’s before going to work for Bloomfield Bridge & Culvert for many years until his retirement. He enjoyed being outdoors, squirrel hunting, fishing, and mushroom hunting. He enjoyed listening to music and dancing. He loved mowing his yard and feeding and watching the squirrels later in life. Jack never knew a stranger and loved to visit with others. He looked forward to his afternoon happy hours with the neighbors, which he often referred to as the “meeting of the minds.” He enjoyed riding along with his friend, Chris, to Graham’s Dairy Freez in Ottumwa to get ice cream. Jack had a huge heart, was very generous and compassionate and would help anyone in need. Jack is survived by his wife, Rosealee; 4 stepchildren, Scott (Kerri) Selix, Sara (Rodney) Leftwich, Corey (Jennifer) Selix, and Andrea Long; his step grandchildren; 5 siblings, Don (Ann) Rhodes, Diana Bonebright, Debra Lancaster, Jim Rhodes, and John Rhodes.; and a special cousin, Cindy Rhodes. Jack is also survived by several other cousins, nieces, nephews, and good friends. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elma; 3 sisters, Donna June, Delores “Dee”, and Darla Kay; and his grandparents, Clyde Ellis and Gladys Gertrude Rhodes and Alfred Robinson and Eva B. Floyd. Per Jack’s wishes, his body was donated to the University of Iowa for academic studies. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
