Barbara Jean Pettyjohn

Barbara Jean Pettyjohn, age 67, of Knoxville, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2011 at her residence in Knoxville. Barbara was born on March 19, 1944, in Knoxville, Iowa to Everett and Mary (Spencer) Roland. She was raised in Marion County. Barbara was united in marriage on May 8, 1970, to Lowell "Crow" Pettyjohn in Milan, IL. They shared nearly 41 wonderful years together before Barbara's passing. Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, and sister. Seeing her family always brought a smile to her face, especially the little ones. Barbara babysat in her home for many years and often referred to the children as "one of her own." Barbara loved to visit with everyone, which was perfect for her job at Wal Mart as a door greeter. Barbara's main hobby was going to the casino and playing slot machines. Her favorite places to play were Prairie Meadows and "the boat." Barbara is survived by her husband, Lowell "Crow" Pettyjohn of Knoxville; her children, Thomas "Toot" Smith Jr. of Oskaloosa; Teresa Smith of Indianola; Noreen (Dave) Yarbrough of Rose Hill; Angela (Derrick) Shafer of Oskaloosa; and Shari (John) Beaty of Knoxville; sixteen grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Merrill Roland of Knoxville, Larry (Sharon) Roland of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Ron (Sue) Roland or New Sharon; and 2 sisters, Sandy (Jerry) Goemaat of Lacona and Linda (Randy) O'Brien of Knoxville. Barbara is preceded in death by a son, Norman Smith; her parents, Everett and Mary Roland; a grandchild, Melinda Pettyjohn-Shafer; three great-grandchildren, Rose Jolly, and Raven and Aiden Umphress. She is also preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Roland, Darlene Pettyjohn, and Norma Buck. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday May 12, 2011 at the Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia, with Rev. Curt Gordon officiating. Interment will be in Marysville Cemetery in Marysville, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at the Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia with Barbara's family present from 6-8 PM. A memorial has been established to the family.
