Berniece Anne Hinton

Berniece Anne Hinton, age 92, of Moravia, IA, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at the Comfort House in Pella, IA. Berniece was born on September 3, 1930, at home in Foster, IA, to William Henry and Hazel (Anderson) VanDorin. She attended country school in Foster and later graduated from the Moravia High School with the Class of 1948. On January 16, 1949, she was united in marriage to Billy G. Wilson in Knoxville, IA. To this union, 6 children were born, Diane, Larry, Sheila, Carol, Donna, and Mark. Berniece and Billy later divorced. On July 4, 1977, Berniece married Kenneth Hinton at the First Christian Church in Albia. Berniece was a homemaker, raising her children and helping her husbands on the farm. She later went to work for the Moravia School District as a long-time aide and librarian, where all of the kids affectionately called her Grandma. Berniece was a former member of the Methodist Church in Moravia and later a member of the First Christian Church in Albia. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and word searches, as well as playing card games such as solitaire, rook, cribbage, pitch, and Uno. She was an excellent cook, known for her minute steak, potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and angel food cakes to celebrate birthdays. She loved being outdoors and vegetable gardening from which she canned green beans, peas, and potatoes and froze corn. She collected bells, was a talented quilter and a member of the Crazy Quilters. She enjoyed spring cleaning and always kept a clean home. Above all else, Berniece enjoyed visiting with others and spending time with her family and friends. Berniece is survived by 4 children, Sheila (Sam) Kirby, Carol (Steve) Dishman, Donna (Dennis) Jackson, and Mark Wilson; Larry’s special friend, Diane Shannon; 6 grandchildren, Jeff (Kristy) Kirby, Joni (Kris) Hutchinson, Jennifer Argo, Brad (Emily) Argo, Amanda (David) Webb, and Josh (Haylee) Bell; 3 step grandchildren, Heather Dishman, Samantha Dishman, and Shannon (Randall) Raskie; and 14 great grandchildren, Taylor (Zac) Gersdorf, Ethan (Hope) Kirby, Landon Kirby, Morgan Kirby, Emma Hutchinson, Hudson Argo, Jaxon Bell, Easton Bell, Reagan Bell, Cora Webb, Thomas Webb, Jacob Webb, Raleigh Raskie, and Andersen Raskie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Hinton; 2 children, Diane Wilson and Larry Wilson; her parents, William and Hazel VanDorin; 4 siblings, Sylvan (Carolyn) VanDorin, Marjorie (Clarence) Baayen, Clell (Augusta) VanDorin, and Cleo (Delbert) Love; and a great granddaughter, Ava Hutchinson. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at Grace United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Moravia, with Berniece’s family present from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. to greet family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastor Dennis Doud officiating. Burial will follow services at Oak View Cemetery in Albia. A memorial has been established to the Moravia First Responders. Berniece’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Monroe Care Center and the staff at the Hospice Comfort House in Pella for the excellent care of Berniece.
